The Telegraph called it one of “world’s greatest festival”, the Giant Kites Festival of Sumpango (Festival de Barriletes Gigantes de Sumpango) is celebrated every year on November 1st. The legend says that the sound made by the impact on the wind on paper chases bad spirits that are bothering the good souls at this time of the year. It is the reason why, every year, you can observe giant handmade kites flying over Sacatepéquez’s cemeteries. Kites can reach out up to 20 meters (65 feet) and their intricate design represent the connection existing between the deads and its family.
The rest of your time, you can go on and explore Antigua, the old colonial city of Guatemala, surrounded by volcanos. Or you can go and take a swim in Lake Atitlán, go explore the market of Panajachel, try the nightlife in Antigua or Guatemala City and hike a volcano.
